Today I went to Wald 9 in Shinjuku to see “Geki×Cine: Demon in the Misty Forest.”
Essentially it’s a filmed stage production — but it was completely different from what I expected.
When the actors fill the whole screen, you can see the sweat dripping after an intense action scene, and even catch a glimpse of the cleverly hidden lapel mics. Each scene is captured from the angle that best suits it — a way of experiencing theater that’s unique to this format.
Tickets are ¥2,500 on the day, or ¥2,000 with Mobile Suica. Slightly more than a typical movie at ¥1,800, but easily worth it.
This production was actually ranked #1 in user reviews on Yahoo Movies.

Nearly everyone who saw it gave it high marks.
I was skeptical going in, but came out fully convinced.
Screenings appear to be limited to a few locations nationally, but if you get the chance — I’d highly recommend it.
