Tokyo Skytree

I went to see Tokyo Skytree.

Folded the bike, took the train to Akihabara (rinko), then rode from Akihabara to Oshiage.

As of today it stands at 368 meters — already 55 meters taller than Tokyo Tower’s 333.

When complete it will be 634 meters. Nearly double the current height.

Even at its current height it has a serious presence and feels genuinely tall. When it’s finished, the scale will be beyond imagining.

You can only see it under construction now, so…

It reminded me of Always: Sunset on Third Street — the modern version of everyone gathering to watch Tokyo Tower go up. Something about that overlapped.

All these people coming out day by day to watch Skytree grow taller looked, to me, like people dreaming of a future Tokyo.

People holding their phones up to the sky and tapping the camera shutter sound — uniquely Japanese, and a perfect symbol of this moment.
