Today I’m at a two-night, three-day academic conference (more of a gathering, really) in Awara Onsen, Fukui Prefecture.
You’d normally picture a conference in a big city, but this one is held in a hot spring resort town — the complete opposite.
So the accommodation is a traditional inn, and the views look like this.
Certainly relaxing, but there’s one problem: food options.
Dinner venues are all fancy and expensive — which doesn’t fit my situation at all.
I need to head out for dinner soon…
Fortunately I have a car, so it’s manageable. If I’d come by train, though — the nearest convenience store is about 2 km away. What would I have done?
During the day it’s all English (this conference runs in English), but evenings are relaxed — that’s definitely the character of this event.
My presentation is tomorrow. Let’s do this.
