Finally bought them.
Kakaku.com showed a nearby store in Akihabara as the cheapest option, so I went and got them. ¥21,800.

I was torn between Sony and Panasonic, but the Panasonic had a lot of defect reports in the Kakaku.com reviews, so I went with Sony this time. Now I can watch movies at night without disturbing anyone!
Immediately connected them to the HDD recorder and watched more of 24.
Very good. Immersive sound without bothering the neighbors — exactly what I wanted.
It’s remarkable how much TV technology has evolved. The days of worrying about whether to record on VHS standard or 3x speed feel like a different era entirely.
The wireless connection was something I was a little worried about, but no issues there, and the sound quality is decent (though I haven’t tried a full DVD yet, so not at 100%). Highly recommended.
