Sugakiya Ramen

Back in Nagoya visiting family, I had Sugakiya ramen for the first time in a while.

If you’re talking Nagoya specialties, this is the one. Ended up ordering the large size, as usual.

Everyone talks about chicken wings and miso nikomi udon as Nagoya food, but you can get those in Tokyo too.

Sugakiya, though — I still haven’t seen one in Tokyo.

That distinctive soup (I always assumed it was tonkotsu, but there’s definitely a katsuobushi note to it…) is genuinely addictive.

In terms of pure quality, trendy ramen specialty shops might have an edge — but there’s a “can’t stop, won’t stop” quality to Sugakiya that keeps me coming back.

This is the large size salad set, but the ramen alone is only ¥290. Cheap!

Competitive with Matsuya’s beef bowl.

Oh, and this was taken on May 1 at Sekai no Yamachan in Shin-Okubo, Tokyo — their chicken wings.

Nagoya food is actually pretty accessible in Tokyo, when you look for it.
