Doyo no Ushi — Eel Day

« Previous Next »

This year there are two Doyo no Ushi (eel-eating days).

July 24 and August 5.

Both fall on weekdays, and the shops would be packed, so I bought mine today instead.

Living alone means automatically:

One eel = one serving.

Occasions like this call for a bit of indulgence.

Delicious. First eel in ages. Though restaurant eel is still better — but this has more of it. Quantity vs. quality is the eternal question.

Today I tried the supermarket one station over for the first time, and realized just how expensive the one near Kamata Station is!

The next station over is significantly cheaper. Really, dramatically cheaper.

I feel slightly cheated for not figuring this out sooner.

I’d assumed all of Tokyo was expensive — turns out Kamata was just abnormally pricey.

Even the eel: ¥1,580 near my place vs. ¥980 where I went today. Both domestic. That’s a big gap even accounting for train fare.

Decided: from now on I’m making the trip when I have time.
