The Akihabara Stabbing Incident

Today I went to Akihabara to buy a body composition scale.

Over half a year since moving to Tokyo — only my second time in Akihabara. (For the record, I am absolutely not the type who goes there every week.)

I was thinking of heading to Sofmap when I noticed an unusually heavy police presence — police officers, patrol cars, unmarked cars, ambulances, fire trucks, all gathered together.

A police cordon had been set up and a crowd had formed.

Not knowing what was going on, I got closer and saw a person on the ground receiving CPR and rescue breathing…

What on earth had happened?

It was frightening, so I moved away from the scene and headed to Yodobashi Camera to get what I came for.

This is what I bought. Figured I might as well get something that also measures body fat percentage and keeps records.

I hadn’t had a scale in the apartment at all, which wasn’t great. Time to start taking some responsibility for my health.

It was ¥8,980 with 20% points back (1,796 points).

Finished my errand and came back — the police were still there.

There was an impact mark about two meters up the windshield of what looked like a 2-ton truck. Which meant…

And a little further off, I spotted an NHK reporter doing what appeared to be a live broadcast. I tuned in on my phone’s 1seg TV and finally understood what had happened.

A truck drove into a pedestrian zone on a red light, and then the driver attacked people with a survival knife.

I can’t believe this. I genuinely cannot believe this. If I’d headed toward Sofmap 10 more minutes earlier…

And the person I’d seen receiving CPR just now — were they…?

A chill ran through me.

My errand was done, so I went straight home.

If your life ended that way, in a place like that — you’d never stop regretting it. A day that made Tokyo feel frightening.
